Jovens Redefinindo a Participação Política em Moçambique

In a world in constant political, economic, and social transformation, it is essential to ensure the involvement of young people in public policy formulation processes and in political participation at all levels. It was in this context that around 1,300 young people from the 11 capital cities of Mozambique participated in the Open Space dialogues, held in their respective municipalities under the theme “Youth and Municipal Governance: challenges and opportunities,” between September 2022 and March 2023.

The Open Space dialogues represent an innovative methodology aimed at promoting political participation among youth in Mozambique. In addition to providing a learning space, these meetings encourage reflection on challenges related to the main pillars of municipal governance: Health, Education, Employment and Economic Activities, Transport, Culture and Sport, Housing, and Public Safety. During these events, young people identified challenges in these areas and developed solution proposals that can be implemented in collaboration with municipal governments, contributing to inclusive development grounded in the political and social rights of youth.

Among the main challenges and proposals raised, the need to promote support programs for entrepreneurship and job creation stands out, as well as improving access to housing and land-use and territorial planning, as well as ensuring inclusive approaches in access to public services, especially those directed at youth. Additionally, the importance of valuing culture, sport, and tourism as catalysts for local development emerged strongly based on  a spirit of collaboration and continuous dialogue between youth and municipal administrations. The integration of young people’s perspectives thus becomes a transformative element in building more inclusive policies oriented toward collective well-being, effectively considering the interests, priorities, and rights of youth.

The Open Space Dialogues are part of the project “Development, Democracy and Rights for All (DDDT)”, co-financed by the European Union and implemented by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation as the main applicant, in partnership with the Organization of Mozambican Workers – Central Trade Union (OTM-CS) and the Platform of Young Leaders of Mozambique (PJLM).
