FES has been working for more than 40 years with its partners on the African continent to transform unjust social and economic contexts and to build conditions for democratic transformative change. The political struggles for the emancipation of the working class and a free society based on solidarity that offers everyone an equal opportunity for economic, social, and cultural participation are thereby inextricably linked to gender justice.
The Competence Center "Gender Justice, Feminism and Transformation", based at FES Mozambique, is a regional communication and coordination hub for FES gender work on the African continent. It connects the diverse initiatives of partners and FES offices and facilitates the collective dialogue around issues concerning gender justice.
The Competence Center organizes as well regional feminist exchanges, for example through the African Feminist Reflection and Action Group. During a series of Feminist Idea Laboratories, the group developed critical analysis towards the rethinking of development models and political participation. Finally, the competence center also coordinates the African contribution to the international FES project "The Future is feminist!".
